Clash Erupts at Cachar College Over Hijab Controversy; Several Students Injured

A violent clash erupted between two student factions, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), over the wearing of hijabs at Cachar College on Tuesday, leaving several students injured and sparking intense tension on campus.

The incident occurred during the day while the NSUI was conducting a membership drive on the college premises. ABVP members allegedly arrived at the spot, disrupted the drive, and objected to several female NSUI students wearing hijabs. This quickly escalated from a heated argument into a full-blown physical altercation between the two groups.

According to sources, multiple NSUI members sustained injuries in the clash. Allegations have surfaced that ABVP members also assaulted some of the female students who were wearing hijabs.

Upon receiving information about the unrest, a police team rushed to Cachar College, brought the situation under control, and shifted the injured students to a local hospital for medical treatment. Although the immediate violence was contained, a sense of heavy tension continues to prevail across the college campus.

Notably, the clash follows a formal demand made just a day prior. On Monday, a section of Cachar College students submitted a memorandum to the District Commissioner of Cachar, demanding a strict ban on Muslim students wearing religious attire, specifically the hijab and topi (caps), inside the educational institution. Today’s outbreak of violence has added a volatile new dimension to the ongoing controversy.
