Court Sentences Dwarbond Man to Life Imprisonment for Murdering Wife

A 31-year-old man accused of murdering his wife 5 years back was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Cachar District and Sessions Court on Friday (December 12). Apan Das (31) of New Bagbahar, Dwarbond, had killed his wife, Kalpana Das, in a fit of rage. The verdict was delivered by Additional Sessions Judge (Fast Track Court) Bankim Sharma on Friday after completion of the trial.

According to case records, the incident occurred on June 17, 2020, when an argument erupted between Apan and his wife at the house where the couple resided as caretakers. In a fit of rage, Apan struck Kalpana on the head with a wooden stick, causing her to bleed and die on the spot.

Hearing the commotion, neighbours rushed to the house. Apan’s uncle, Sumanta Das, who lived nearby, also reached the location. The accused was restrained by locals and later handed over to the police. Sumanta informed police that Apan had attempted to take his own life after killing his wife but was prevented by others.

Following the investigation, the case proceeded to trial, culminating in the judgment on Friday. The court convicted Apan Das under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), which prescribes punishment for murder and carries the possibility of the death penalty or life imprisonment. He was also fined Rs. 20,000, and in case of default, he will undergo an additional six months of simple imprisonment.
