Daring robbery in Sonai: Armed gang posing as police ties up women, loots gold and cash

A daring late-night robbery took place in Salepur village under Sonai Police Station in Cachar district, where armed miscreants tied up two women and looted gold ornaments and cash from their house. The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday (13 April).

According to police and local sources, the incident occurred around 2 am at the residence of the late Debajit Nath in Berabak Part 1 of Sonai. A group of around five armed robbers allegedly broke into the house by forcing open the grill lock and then gaining access to the main door. They threatened the occupants with weapons and carried out the robbery.

The victims, Anjali Nath and her daughter-in-law Mayuri Nath, said the robbers identified themselves as police before entering the house. Speaking about the incident, Anjali Nath, the elderly head of the family, said they heard loud knocking at the door late at night. When they asked who was there, the men shouted “police” and forced their way inside.

“They asked us to stay quiet and then tied us up. One by one, they took my chain, earrings and everything else. Then they went to my daughter-in-law’s room and looted her cupboard, including her gold jewellery,” she said. She added that the robbers were armed with rods, knives and even a firearm, and that there were at least five men inside the house, though there could have been more outside.

Mayuri Nath said the robbers gagged her and ransacked the house thoroughly. “They covered my mouth and started searching everything. They took around Rs 20,000 to Rs 25,000 in cash along with jewellery. Around six to seven bhori of gold is missing,” she said.

She further claimed that the attackers appeared to be Bengali-speaking and had partially concealed their identities. “Two of them were wearing raincoats and helmets, while others had their faces covered with gamchas. Some were in vests, and all of them had their shoes tied to their waists,” she added.

On receiving information in the morning, a large police team from Sonai Police Station reached the spot and began an investigation. Senior officials, including Cachar Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Rajat Kumar Pal and Probationary DSP Rimank Baruah, also visited the scene along with a forensic team.

Police sources said that several samples have been collected from the spot for forensic examination. A case has been registered at Sonai Police Station based on a complaint filed by Mayuri Nath. Further investigation is underway.
