Demolition First, 4 Lanes Next! Medical College Road Work Begins 5 August

The Cachar district administration will begin demolition work from 5 August for the long-awaited four lane expansion of the Silchar Medical College Road in Meherpur. Ahead of the drive, officials carried out public announcements in the Birbal Bazar area, asking residents and shopkeepers to remove their belongings from the acquired land within the stipulated time.

The demolition is the first stage of the project to widen the existing two lane road into a four lane carriageway. According to the administration, the work will be carried out in phases to ensure the project progresses smoothly.

Speaking to the media, PWD (Roads) Executive Engineer Aniruddha Nag said an important review meeting was held on Monday (August 3) at the conference hall regarding several upcoming infrastructure projects, including the Birbal Bazar to Silchar Medical College road.

He said the meeting was attended by Minister Kaushik Rai, Silchar MLA Rajdeep Roy, Dholai MLA Rajdeep Goala, and the Cachar District Commissioner. Following directions issued at the meeting, the department was instructed to begin the four lane project immediately.

Nag said the project will be implemented in stages. The first phase will involve demolition, followed by shifting of utility services, construction of drainage infrastructure, and finally the road building work for the four lane carriageway.

He also thanked the residents of Meherpur, especially those who voluntarily demolished portions of their houses that had been marked for acquisition, and appealed for continued public cooperation during the project.

Meanwhile, the PWD Roads Division has also started repairing large potholes on the Meherpur Medical College Road following written instructions from Minister Kaushik Rai, Silchar MLA Rajdeep Roy and directions from the Cachar District Commissioner.

The administration expects that once the four lane project is completed, traffic congestion on the busy stretch will reduce significantly and connectivity in Silchar will improve.
