
Dholai: Fast Track Court Sentences Auto Driver To Seven Years For Raping Housewife in 2017
Fast Track Court in Cachar has sentenced a 49-year-old auto driver, Joynul Haque Barbhuiya of Rajgobindpur under Dholai police station, to seven years of rigorous imprisonment for raping a housewife.
The incident dates back to July 14, 2017, when the 35-year-old victim was returning home from the market around 9 in the morning. At a deserted spot, Joynul allegedly stopped her, used obscene language, gagged her mouth and dragged her into a forest where he forcibly raped her. He later threatened to kill her if she spoke about the incident.
The victim somehow managed to return home and lodged an FIR at Dholai police station the next day. Based on the complaint, the police registered a case and began an investigation. After the completion of the investigation, the trial began in court, which went on for over 8 years.
After hearing the case, the court of Additional Sessions Judge (Fast Track Court) Bankim Sharma pronounced him guilty on August 18, 2025. On Wednesday (August 20), the court handed down the sentence under IPC Sections 376 and 506.
Along with 7 years imprisonment, Joynul was fined Rs. 20,000, failing which he will have to serve an additional three months in jail. Pradip Kumar Patoa appeared as the government counsel, while Tinku Baidya represented the accused.
