District Administration Issues Flood Advisory In Cachar As Barak River Crosses Danger Mark on September 15

With continuous heavy rainfall over the past two days and the water level of the Barak River crossing the danger mark on Monday morning (September 15), the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Cachar, has issued a public advisory warning of “flood-like conditions” across the district. This comes just two weeks ahead of Durga Puja, which is falling a pall on the preparations.

The advisory, released by the office of the District Commissioner, urges residents of Silchar and surrounding areas to avoid unnecessary movement in low-lying and waterlogged areas, particularly during heavy rains. Citizens have also been advised to keep electrical appliances switched off, store valuables at elevated places, and stay alert for possible waterlogging or evacuation.

The DDMA has strictly cautioned people against walking or driving through flooded streets to prevent accidents or getting stranded. Residents are asked to keep emergency kits ready, including dry food, drinking water, and essential medicines.

“In case of emergency, the public may contact the District Control Room, Revenue Circle Office, BDO Office, or the nearest Police Station for assistance,” the advisory stated, adding that all departments have been instructed to remain on high alert and take proactive measures to address any emerging situations.

The administration has also appealed to the public not to spread rumours or panic and to rely only on official sources for information.

For emergencies, residents can contact the district helplines:

  • Phone: 03842-239249 / 03842-234005
  • Mobile: 94016-24141
  • Email: ddma-cachar@assam.gov.in

The district administration confirmed it is actively monitoring the situation as rainfall continues across Cachar.
