‘Don’t Think Your Uniform Will Save You’: Zubair Anam Warns Police Over Alleged False Cases

Congress MLA from Algapur-Katlicherra Zubair Anam Mazumder issued a sharp warning to Cachar Police and the Officer-in-Charge of Silchar Sadar Police Station during an election campaign for the upcoming Silchar Municipal Corporation polls.

Addressing a gathering during the campaign, Anam alleged that police personnel were creating difficulties for Congress workers during the election campaign, including over permission for party meetings and programmes.

Questioning the political leadership behind the administration, Anam said the present government would not remain in power forever. He claimed that in three years, the political situation could change and asked who would protect police officers then.

“Today you raise a hand over our workers, arrest them and everything will be returned to you with interest after three years,” Anam said.

He further alleged that Congress workers were being subjected to false cases and harassment. He said the party was keeping records of those allegedly involved in such actions and warned that he would remember the officers and officials concerned if Congress returned to power.

“Those who are filing fake cases against our workers, and each police officer and IO, if we cannot take action against them for such deeds, change my name,” he said.

Anam also extended his warning to the wider administration, saying that the message was not limited to the police.

Speaking about his age and political career, the MLA compared his political timeline with that of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Anam said that while Sarma may have around 20 years of political time ahead, he himself had around 50 years.

“I am 35 years old. Today Himanta Biswa Sarma, whom everyone thinks is the most powerful man, has a lot of money and power. But he does not have one thing that I have, and that is time,” Anam said.

He also said that Congress workers were not afraid despite the BJP being in power in both Assam and at the Centre. Referring to alleged arrests and police action against party workers, he said Congress workers were prepared to face jail and other consequences.

“You have already put us in jail. Put me back. I can stay with no issues,” he said.

The Congress MLA also referred to alleged police action, including lathi-charge, and yet the party workers continued to raise the slogan of “Congress Zindabad”.

His remarks come amid campaigning for the Silchar Municipal Corporation election, where political parties are engaged in an increasingly active campaign ahead of polling.
