ED raids alleged betel nut syndicate kingpin Abub Majumdar’s house in Silchar
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday (July 3) carried out a search operation at the residence of alleged betel nut syndicate kingpin Abub Majumdar in Silchar’s Itkhola area. Officials from the ED’s Guwahati and Kolkata units began the operation in the morning and continued searching the premises.
Majumdar has long been accused of leading a Burmese betel nut smuggling and trading syndicate. He allegedly amassed substantial wealth over the years and is believed to own several properties, both in his own name and through other individuals, in Silchar, Guwahati and other locations.
According to available information, Majumdar had previously been arrested on multiple occasions by the Assam Police and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in connection with alleged offences.
The ED has now launched its own investigation into his alleged financial dealings. A large team of officials was deployed for the search operation at his residence.
Sources claimed that Majumdar fled the area after learning about the ED’s operation. However, there has been no official confirmation from the ED regarding his whereabouts or whether he is currently wanted in connection with the investigation.
The search operation was underway at the time of filing this report. Further details are awaited.
