Election Commission Orders Special Revision of Electoral Rolls in Assam; Final List on February 10, 2026

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced a Special Revision of Assam’s electoral rolls with January 1, 2026, as the qualifying date. The final list will be published on February 10, 2026, according to a circular issued by the Secretary, ECI, to the Chief Electoral Officer of Assam.

The revision will be carried out under Section 21 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950. Pre-revision activities begin from November 18 to 21, including the printing of documents and the training of officials. This will be followed by house-to-house verification from November 22 to December 20, during which BLOs will check electors’ details, rationalise polling stations and remove discrepancies in the electoral rolls/EPICs.

From December 21 to 26, Formats 1 to 8 and the integrated draft roll will be prepared. The integrated draft roll will be published on December 27. Claims and objections can be filed from December 27, 2025, to January 22, 2026.

Welcoming the decision, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma posted on X that the Special Revision would ensure “clean, updated and accurate electoral rolls” and assured full cooperation from the Assam government. “The Govt of Assam welcomes the Election Commission of India’s decision to undertake a Special Revision of the electoral roll with 01.01.2026 as the qualifying date.
This will help ensure clean, updated and accurate electoral rolls for all eligible citizens. Assam will extend full cooperation to the @ECISVEEP to complete the revision in a transparent and time-bound manner”, Sarma wrote.

Speaking to Barak Bulletin, Cachar Deputy Commissioner Mridul Yadav clarified that a Special Summary Revision is conducted annually to add new voters and remove ineligible names. With elections approaching, the Special Revision aims to further strengthen and finalise the voter list. He emphasised that this process is different from the Special Intensive Revision recently carried out in Bihar and other states.

The ECI has directed Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) to ensure no eligible voter is excluded and no ineligible name is included. BLOs will receive prefilled registers for verification, and EROs will reassess polling stations to ensure none have more than 1,200 electors, except with prior approval.

The Commission has also instructed 100% removal of probable duplicates and multiple entries, after system flags and field verification.

Assam was excluded last month from the pan-India Special Intensive Revision (SIR) due to the ongoing citizenship-related matter under the Supreme Court’s supervision. The state heads to Assembly polls next year.
