122 prisoners sit for indefinite hunger strike in Karimganj District Jail
Prisoners of Karimganj Jail started a united movement in the jail premises demanding swift delivery of justice to them by granting bail in time. As per the families of these prisoners, many of the inmates are living in jail due to charges raised against them in various cases since many years. The accused prisoners appeared in the court as per the law but no promptness was shown to grant them bail. Justice system becomes slack sometimes. As the accused prisoners are not granted bail on time, their families are facing many problems. The families also asked the accused prisoners to be charged under law if found guilty or else be bailed out. Making these demands, the jail inmates sat on an indefinite hunger strike in the Karimganj Jail premises since this morning.
Speaking to reporters, a family member of a jail inmate said, “My brother is in jail in a drug case since 1 year 2 months. He has been jailed due to a conspiracy. His wife and children are crying at home as they don’t have any earning member to provide them food. We have ran from pillar to post but still he has not been granted bail yet. Today they have sat on an indefinite hunger strike in the jail premises.”
Another relative of two jail inmates told reporters, “My niece’s son-in-law and niece are in jail in a drug case since 4 years. They are neither granted bail nor trial is conducted. Their family members are earning a living by begging. We demand to the government that the cases should be closed by either releasing them or giving them punishment if they are found guilty as per law.”
