According to a statement shared by the Cachar District Administration, a 124 kilometre long four lane highway will be constructed between Silchar and Churaibari. Srikona’s Daily Bazar will be considered as the Zero point of the project in Cachar. 32 kilometres of the proposed highway will be in Cachar and remaining 73 kilometres in Karimganj. The statement from the administration stated that the project has been commissioned under the Bharatmala Pariyojana.
Bharatmala Pariyojana is a new umbrella program for the highways sector that focuses on optimizing efficiency of freight and passenger movement across the country by bridging critical infrastructure gaps through effective interventions like development of Economic Corridors, Inter Corridors and Feeder Routes, National Corridor Efficiency Improvement, Border and International connectivity roads, Coastal and Port connectivity roads and Green-field expressways.
In a meeting held at the deputy commissioner’s office, the project was discussed in details. Officials of the National Highway Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) were present in the meeting also graced by MLA Silchar, Dipayan Chakraborty, MLA Borkhola Misbahul Islam Laskar and MLA Katigorah, Khalil Ahmed.
The deputy commissioner of Cachar, as per the statement shared, has asked the Revenue, Development and Forest departments to jointly survey the realignment of the road and furnish a report. The MLAs asked the administration to ensure that if any land is acquired, proper remuneration is handed over to the beneficiaries.
DC Cachar instructed the NHIDCL official to prepare video recording from zero point Srikona daily bazar to ending point Barak bridge near Malua through aerial Drone survey of the projected four lane road to overcome any further dispute.
However she suggested in the meeting to conduct another meeting in the next week for giving approval to the proposed DPR if no objection is noticed from any side.
