18 Rohingyas Including Women And Children, were Detained In Kalain While Attempting To Return To Bangladesh
After a brief pause, yet another group of Rohingyas has been caught in Cachar while attempting to return to Bangladesh. On Friday, police detained 18 Rohingyas, including women and children, from Kalain market after locals grew suspicious of their movements and informed authorities.
According to police sources, the detainees had been residing illegally in Hyderabad for several years. Following the Indian government’s ongoing crackdown on illegal foreign nationals, they reportedly came to Kalain to cross over to Bangladesh. A broker, who had promised to help them return safely, allegedly fled after bringing them to Kalain.
Locals noticed their suspicious behaviour and questioned them, leading to the revelation that they were Rohingyas originally from Myanmar who had taken refuge in Bangladesh before entering India illegally in search of a livelihood. Acting swiftly on the locals’ information, police detained the group and later transported them to Silchar.
The detained individuals have been identified as Abu Bakkar, Jamir Raja, Mobarak Ali, Rahim Uddin, Rubina Akhtar, Mobarak Begum, Asmira Begum, Jamila Begum, and ten children.
One of them said they wanted to shift back to Bangladesh, but they didn’t know where the border was and which route they should take and that’s how they reached Cachar.
It is worth mentioning that in the last two months alone, nearly 250 illegal foreign nationals have been detained from Katigorah and adjoining areas along the India-Bangladesh border in Cachar district.
