It is certainly not a very good morning for the people of Barak Valley, especially for those, who voted for AIUDF’s Nijam Uddin Choudhury and elected him as the MLA of Algapur. A 19-year-old housewife has alleged that the MLA of raping her and has filed a report in Hailakandi police station. This has caused quite a stir in the entire state and got the police department rolling. Top officials of Hailakandi Police is investigating the matter with great detail, and a case has been registered under IPC 376/342/34.
The housewife alleges that her husband Sahid Ahmed Laskar AKA Sajan on May 19, 2018, escorted her to MLA Nijam Uddin’s room in Hailakandi circuit house and that is when she was brutally raped by the political leader. She also mentioned to Police that she tried her level best to resist and escape, but the MLA forced himself on her and she had to succumb to his strength. That was not the only time she was raped by Nijam Uddin, as she shared that on May 23 the MLA visited her husband’s house and raped her in the second floor of the residence. She also mentioned that the MLA wanted her to travel to Guwahati with him on June 15 but after she refused to go with him, he returned. The housewife told Police that her husband Sajan is equally involved in this repeated sexual assaults on her. She said whenever she wanted to come out in public and talk about what she is going through, she was locked in a closet by her husband. It was only yesterday evening she managed to sneak out of her husband’s house and rush to the Police station.
The MLA, however, rejected all such allegations and said these are orchestrated attempts of demeaning him. He accepts that he met Sajan’s wife in his room in Hailakandi circuit house, but in different circumstances. He said, “Sajan and his wife have been going through a tough time in their marriage. They were fighting a lot and they came to see me in the circuit house to sort out issues.”
If the MLA is so confident that he is speaking the truth and has not done any crime, he can definitely file a defamation case in order to defend his public image. But, if the housewife is speaking the truth then it is a new all-time low for Barak Valley. It is the Police investigation and judiciary that would decide who is speaking the truth. Meanwhile, the housewife’s privacy and security should be a top priority.
