3 Rohingya families with 26 members detained in Silchar; "They have come from Jammu and Kashmir," SP

Three SUVs driving from Guwahati to Silchar were detained in the wee hours of Sunday. 26 members from the three vehicles have been detained at Silchar Sadar Police Station. It has been confirmed that all 26 of them are Myanmar residents and most likely, Rohingyas who have travelled all the way to Silchar from Jammu via Delhi.

After deboarding the train at Kamakhya Railway Station, they boarded three Toyota Innova cars and drove to Silchar. 12 Children along with other members were led to Silchar by a specific lead.

“There are three families and they have a contact in Silchar. We are trying to identify the lead who directed them to Silchar. They have come from Jammu however, their purpose of visit is unknown,” informed Cachar SP, Ramandeep Kaur.

One of them had a UN issued refugee card. They have admitted that they entered India through West Bengal border from Bangladesh and then went to Jammu. “There is someone in Silchar who were in touch with them. We are trying to trace the person,” said Cachar SP.

What is also suspicious is the fact that all three drivers are from Barak Valley. The Police is suspecting if the vehicles were sent to pick them up instead of them hiring the vehicle from Kamakhya Railway Station. Ranjan Sinha, resident of Bazaricherra, Karimganj, Raja Kar, resident of Ambicapur, Silchar and Suban Deb, resident of 2nd Link Road, Rangirkhari are the three drivers detained by the Police.

It is worth mentioning here that in the month of March, NIA conducted an operation and busted ‘Kumkum Gang’ operated by KK Ahmed of Katigorah. This gang used to lure Rohingya refugees towards them and then eventually use them for human trafficking.

If there is a resurgence of Kumkum gang, is something that remains unknown. For now, the 26 of them will be forwarded to the detention camp in Silchar Sadar Police Station. The Cachar administration will try the push back mechanism, but it is not sure how it will materialise.
