3,100 houses, 41,000 people in 138 villages of Cachar affected by flood; Air fare skyrockets
There’s no change of fate for the people of Barak Valley, as the soaring Barak River has again wreaked havoc in the valley after torrential rainfall in the last few days. Flood has become a recurring phenomenon in the state of Assam, particularly in the areas situated in Barak and Brahmaputra valley.
The State Disaster Management Force, BSF, and Assam Rifle personnel have been deployed to tackle the flood situation in the valley. It is informed that almost 3100 houses are damaged due to the heavy rainfall and consequent flood in the valley.
This time, with uninterrupted heavy rainfall, almost 41 thousand people from Cachar’s 138 villages have been affected by the flood situation, according to the information shared by Cachar District Administration. A total of 1685 people have sought shelter in 12 relief camps. According to the press release by the District Administration, 2099 hector of agricultural field is now submerged under the water. The District Administration has sent 3.3 Metric Ton of rice, 600 kg of Pulse, and 180 kg of salt to the relief camps in Katigorah area. 45 Kg rice, 9 kg Pulse, and 32 Litre Edible oil were given to the three relief camps under the Silchar circle. The administration has also provided mineral water for the people staying in camps.
Deputy Commissioner of Cachar Keerthi Jalli has visited the flood-affected areas of Borkhola and Udharbond. P. K. Kalita, the superintendent of Cachar’s distribution department, has assured that an ample amount of essential items are stored. There’s no scarcity. However, the district administration is keeping a vigil on the market prices of essential commodities in the market.
Not only flood, but the heavy rainfall has also disconnected the valley along with state of Tripura and Mizoram from the rest of the country as many long distance trains have been cancelled due to the damages in the railway track, the communication through the National Highway 6 has also been disrupted due to landslides at different places. Due to the rise in demand for air tickets, the airfare has already skyrocketed.
