40 lakh sanctioned to renovate the drainage lifelines of Silchar

Water-logging in the heartland of Barak Valley has remained a teething issue for a long time. An hour of downpour causes havoc on the streets of Silchar and the logged water at times take days to clear. This condition might improve in the coming monsoon as Rs 40 lakh has been sanctioned to renovate Rangirkhal and Longaikhal – the drainage lifeline of Silchar.

In a meeting chaired by the Deputy Commissioner of Cachar and head of District Disaster Management Authority S Lakshmanan, several issues related to natural calamity were discussed in details. MLA Aminul Haque Laskar, Mihir Kanti Shome, Amar Chand Jain was also present in the meeting. Apart from drainage several initiatives to control flood and land erosion were also discussed and sanctioned. The members present in the meeting turned pages assess the pending work.

It is worth mentioning here that under the direction of the former Deputy Commissioner the drainage renovation work had gathered pace. Many drains were cleaned and trespassers were evicted. But, due to some unknown reason the work was stopped abruptly. With this new sanction, people of Barak Valley can expect a better monsoon in 2019.
