4728 kg ganja seized at Churaibari by Karimganj Police: "Largest seizure in a while": CM
Karimganj Police has seized a huge quantity of Ganja from a truck at a checkpost in Churaibari. On the night of August 29, this consignment was seized by the police. The weight of the package went up to 4728 kilograms. The driver of the truck has managed to escape, even before the checking could be initiated. CM Himanta Biswa Sharma has tweeted on this matter to praise the Karimganj Police.
Niranjan Das, SI of Churaibari Outpost, talking about last night’s raid informed, “When I along with my available staff conducted naka checking duty at Churaibari WP Naka Check Point on NH -08, a twelve wheeler goods carrier was approaching the checkpost at around 08:25 PM. The truck bearing registration number AS 01 FC 1894, was coming from the Tripura side. Due to heavy traffic another vehicle was under check and at the moment, the driver of the truck managed to escape from the spot”. The SI further said, “The truck was thoroughly checked and during checking total 4728 kgs suspected to be Ganja was recovered from the truck which was concealed under Rubber sheet bundles. The truck along with the Ganja was seized in presence of independent witness. Legal action will be initiated”.
Assam CM, Himanta Biswa Sarma also took to the microblogging site Twitter and wrote with the hashtag #AssamAgainstDrugs, “In largest seizure in a while by @assampolice, @karimganjpolice seized 4,728 kg ganja hidden under sheets of natural rubber in a truck coming from a neighbouring state on Monday. Great work! Keep it up”.
The suspected ganja was sealed with brown cellophane in boxes and hidden under rubber sheets inside the truck. There were more than a hundred such boxes which is now under the custody of the Assam Police along with the truck. Churaibari is over 70 kilometres away from Silchar and is the last village before entering Tripura from Assam.
