5 died at Silchar Medical College with COVID in the last 24 hours; 37 in ICU, 40 on Oxygen Support

The second wave of COVID infection has hit Assam and hard. The state is recording a surge in the number of cases and Barak Valley’s positivity rate is higher than the state’s. In such a scenario, it is obvious that the medical infrastructure will be under immense stress. Practically, there is one medical college and hospital with capabilities of treating symptomatic patients for a population of 40 lakh people.

Doctors, nurses, and officers in charge of Health and Family Welfare are working extra hours to provide adequate treatment. However, as it has been seen in Delhi, UP, Mumbai, Bangalore, where the healthcare infrastructure is far more developed than Barak Valley, no treatment is adequate when the wave hits hard.

In the last 24 hours, five individuals have been declared dead at Silchar Medical College and Hospital’s COVID ward. This is so far the highest number of deaths reported in a span of.

Dr. Bhaskar Gupta, vice-principal of SMCH informed that 71-year-old Shekar Chandra Das, Banamali Road, Karimganj resident was declared dead yesterday at 8:00 pm. He took admission to the hospital on May 6.

2nd Link Road, Silchar resident, 50-year-old Mridul Kanti Roy was admitted to the hospital on May 3 and was declared dead on May 6 at 9:00 pm. 69-year-old Sukh Sagar Dutta was also declared dead today at 7:30 am. He was admitted to the hospital yesterday. Debi Kanungo, a 70-year-old Silchar resident was also declared dead today at 1:35 pm.

At 5:50 pm, the doctors at the COVID ward declared that Prabash Chakraborty who is a resident of Ganganagar in Cachar has breathed his last. Making in five deaths in the last 24 hours. There are more patients in critical condition battling death, informed the medical officers.

Vice Principal, Dr. Bhaskar Gupta informed that currently, there are 160 active patients under treatment in Silchar Medical College and Hospital’s Covid ward. Out of them, 37 are in ICU and 10 under ventilator. 40 patients are on oxygen support. Today, 17 patients took admission to the COVID ward of SMCH while seven got discharged.
