Seven Rohingya immigrants released from Silchar jail and deported to Myanmar
Today, Silchar Central jail was the centre of all attention. Not because someone was brought in but seven were actually released. After diplomats from India and Myanmar reached to an understanding, seven Rohingyas were released from Silchar Jail amidst strict security arrangements.
There were 13 Myanmar citizens in Silchar jail; arrested because of their illegal entry to the country. Myanmar government agreed to accept seven of the 13 as their citizens and thus Government of India released them from jail and handed them over to Myanmar officials.
After leaving Silchar jail, all seven left for Myanmar through Manipur. As per sources, they were held captive for about five years.
As per information given by Principal Secretary, Home & Political Department government of Assam L. S. Changsan, there are about 32 Myanmar citizens held captive in various jails across Assam for illegally entering the country.
The principal secretary also informed that details of each and every detained Myanmar citizens have been submitted to the Myanmar government and if Myanmar accepts everyone as their citizen, all of them will be officially handed over. But for now it is only seven who got the recognition.
Deputy Commissioner of Cachar, S Lakshmanan informed us that everything was conducted following the guidelines set by the Home Ministry of government of India.
“As per government order, a list of all the foreigners detained in Cachar was handed over to the Home & Political Department government of Assam. On the basis of that list seven were released today,” he said.
As per sources there are also about 50 illegal Bangladeshi immigrants held captive in Silchar Central Jail and a total of 105 foreigners’ address is the jail compound.
The seven who got lucky today are, Mohammed Jamal, Maqbul Khan, Jamal Hussain, Mohammed Younus, Shabbir Ahmed, Rahim Uddin and Mohammed Salam.
