8 Rohingya Muslims including 1 female and 5 minors arrested in Hailakandi

Eight Rohingya Muslims, including one female and 5 minors, have been arrested from Algapur in Hailakandi district on charges of illegally entering the country, police said on Friday.

Based on specific information, a police team raided a house in the Algapur area of Hailakandi and arrested the eight along with another who is accused of providing shelter to the foreign nationals.

Speaking with Barak Bulletin, Hailakandi SP PK Nath said that the group went to Jammu and Kashmir in the year 2013. After staying there for years they moved to Delhi and then settled at Hyderabad. “After lockdown they got unemployed and in search of work, they reached Hailakandi of Assam,” SP Nath informed.

“We have initiated legal action against seven of them, as the eighth one is below 7 years, and have been sent to jail with mother. We took 2 days of remand from the court and have been sent back to jail,” SP further informed.

The news comes following another incident where 14 Rohingya Muslims were arrested from Agartala-New Delhi Special Rajdhani express, last Friday, from New Jalpaiguri station. The Railway Protection force, in a statement, informed that all the 14 boarded the train from Assam’s Badarpur station and had escaped from a refugee camp in Bangladesh.
