9 cases registered since June 29 violence, Cachar SP urges public to mantain peace and harmony

In a press conference held today, Cachar Superintendent of Police (SP) Numal Mahatta addressed the current law and order situation in the district, assuring the public that the situation is gradually returning to normalcy. The SP provided an update on the measures taken by the police to restore peace and maintain order.

Following the unfortunate incident that occurred on June 29 at College Road, the police force was deployed throughout the area. Since then, the situation has been improving. A peace meeting was convened yesterday, attended by various political parties and organisations, where a unanimous appeal was made to the public to uphold peace and harmony.

However, despite these efforts, two separate incidents of stone pelting occurred yesterday evening, allegedly perpetrated by miscreants attempting to disrupt the peace. The SP emphasised that swift action was taken, and individuals from both communities involved in the incidents have been arrested and are currently undergoing interrogation.

Addressing concerns about external influences, SP Mahatta mentioned that some miscreants residing outside of Cachar have been engaging in objectionable behavior on social media platforms, attempting to incite a particular section of the population. The police are actively examining these individuals and will take strict lawful action against them.

To prevent the spread of rumors and maintain a peaceful environment, the administration has initiated mobile announcements in sensitive areas across the district. These announcements aim to create awareness among the public, urging them to refrain from rumor mongering and contribute to the peaceful atmosphere.

So far, nine cases have been registered relating to incidents that have taken place since June 29, and a thorough investigation is currently underway. The SP concluded by emphasising that even individuals indirectly connected to these incidents will not be spared, demonstrating the authorities’ commitment to ensuring justice prevails.
