NRC: Supreme Court extends deadline to December 31
The Supreme Court on Wednesday extended the deadline for filing NRC claims and objections to December 31. The procedure is currently in process in Assam.
This is for the second time the apex court has extended the deadline. Earlier, the deadline was shifted from November 25 to December 15, and now it’s pushed to December 31.
The Assam Government had appealed to the Supreme Court for extension of deadline on the basis of demand by various organisations and people of Assam.
The verification process will commence from 15/2/19 instead of 1/2/19 and objections can be filed at district headquarters from now onwards.
Moreover, the cut off date for list B documents for proving linkage with the legacy holder has been removed. Earlier it was kept as 31/8/15.
The process of filing claims and objections to the draft citizens’ register in Assam began in September. The claims and objection will decide the fate of 40 lakh people, whose names were left out of the final draft.
Those who have not yet submitted the form, they must submit the form at any cost, in nearby NRC Seva Kendra. Some organizations in Silchar are helping and urging people to submit the form before the deadline. They are also appealing to submit the claim form along with self-declaration on white paper without having any documents in hand. Those who do not submit the form will be treated as foreigners, and those who submit the claim, they will have the opportunity to fight legally on the basis of the claim in the future.
