Site finalised for medical college in Karimganj
The construction of a medical college in Karimganj district, which was one of the poll promises of the state government, is set to start soon.
Considering the necessity of a healthcare hub in south Assam, the state government had a couple of years ago decided to set up a medical college in Karimganj district. Presently, there is only one medical college in Barak Valley. It is located in Silchar and is the biggest hospital in the valley.
The site for the medical college has been finalised. It will be built at Dohalia under Patharkandi constituency, around 106km from Silchar, and will be spread over an area of around 256 bighas.
Meanwhile, the news has caused fury among some Congress leaders including Karimganj North legislator Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha and former minister Siddeque Ahmed. Purkayastha has questioned how the site was finalised without any report of the expert committee, while Siddeque Ahmed has asked why there was no official announcement about this from the government’s side.
Assam Industrial Development Corporation chairman Mission Ranjan Das, however, said the site for the medical college had been selected as per the decision of the government.
It may be mentioned that different organisations, particularly in Hailakandi district, had demanded that the medical college be set up in Son Beel.
The organisations’ members had placed their perspective that the residents of all the three districts of the valley would be equally benefited if the college was set up in Son Beel.
Patharkandi legislator Krishnendu Paul was not available for his reaction over the matter.
