Strike in Assam University continues; students blocked main gate
Student agitation continues in Assam University Silchar. The students of the central university is irked at the administration with various issues and that is why they have resorted to protests. While the agitation was going on since last couple of days, today, the students sat in front of the main gate and barricaded it resulting a complete blockade.
There are several issues that students are protesting against and one of them is the scholarship. Milton Das of Assam University Silchar’s research scholar association informs us that about 250 students have been deprived of their scholarships, “Since 2017 not a single student received any scholarships and that is one of the biggest reason why we are protesting today,” says he.
Apart from that the condition of road is also an issue that the students have pointed out. “A magistrate visited us this morning on behalf of the district administration and assured us that the work will be done as soon as possible. But, we have had many such assurances before and that won’t work any more,” adds Das.
The students are also irked at the Vice Chancellor, Dilip Chandra Nath. A student while addressing the gathering said on microphone that it has been more than three years he and his batchmates are studying in the university and their three year graduation course is not concluded yet. “We went to the VC Sir and told him Sir, our course is not getting over as the University is not scheduling examinations. He replied, why do you guys reach out to me for such small issues,” said the student. The students even took a jibe at VC’s Japan trip and said he is busy travelling instead of concentrating on the betterment of the institution and its students.
Another issue that students are agitating against is the charges associated with Convocation. As per their allegation the administration is mismanaging funds by charging students way more than what the actual convocation expense is.
