Earthquake of 6.1 magnitude jolts Assam, whole Northeast
At 1:45 AM, many in Assam were shocked awake as their bed started shaking. An earthquake of 6.1 magnitude jolted Barak Valley and most of Northeast. The strong quake’s epicenter was located approximately 70 miles (113 km) northwest of the town of Dibrugarh, at a depth of 18.6 miles (30 km). Some reports also claim the epicenter to be 41 km from Aalo, Arunachal Pradesh.
People in Silchar as well as Karimganj stated that they felt the tremors of the quake. A resident of Silchar said the fan started moving abnormally but before he could realise it is a quake it was all over.
The Karimganj resident mentioned that his head was spinning, however, he thought he was tired and thus feeling dizzy.
This is the second quake felt by the people of this region. On April 4, 2019, Low-intensity earthquake was reported at around 1:17 PM in the afternoon. Residents of Silchar and the entire Northeastern region felt tremors of the earthquake. As per the Government update, the epicentre of the earthquake was around 25 kms away from Phek in Nagaland, close to India-Myanmar international border. The magnitude of the earthquake was measured to be 5.3 on Richter’s scale.
