Congress issues show-cause notice to Gautam Roy for celebrating after BJP’s victory

Veteran Congress leader Gautam Roy has again landed himself into controversy. The former minister in Assam Government was spotted celebrating on May 23, 2019, a day when the Narendra Modi wave decimated opposition in Assam and all across India. At a time when all senior Congress leaders were introspecting to figure out what went wrong, Roy was distributing sweets, playing with colours. Not only that he was also raising slogans like, “Jai Shree Ram”, “Narendra Modi Zindabad”.

Videos and images of Roy celebrating BJP’s victory went viral on Social Media. BJP supporters started giving him credits for Kripanath Mallah’s victory from Karimganj, while Congress loyalists called him ‘traitor’. While social media buzz was sky high, Roy himself too added fuel to the fire, he was quoted by local dailies saying, “Raising Jai Shree Ram Slogan is my birth right.”

Newly elected member of parliament from Silchar Lok Sabha, BJP’s Rajdeep Roy too commented on Gautam Roy. A reporter asked Roy if BJP would be open to accepting the Congress veteran in the party to which Roy replied, “If Gautam Roy is ready to follow BJP’s beliefs then the party won’t have any problem in accepting him.”

Forest and environment, excise and fishery minister of Assam, Parimal Suklabaidya was also asked by the scribes to comment on Gautam Roy’s celebration. The minister said with smiles, “He knows that Narendra Modi’s re-election as the Prime Minister of India will help the Northeast and Hailakandi develop in the days ahead and that is why he must be celebrating.”

Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), on the other hand, is irked by Gautam Roy’s celebration. A senior member of the committee informed us that a show-cause notice has been served to the former minister. The member said that APCC is aware of Roy’s recent activity and is not going to take it lightly. “The disciplinary committee is looking into the matter. They are waiting for Roy to respond to the show-cause notice and on the basis of his reply they would take further action,” said the member.
