Another road accident in Udharbond; One dead
A 45-year-old man was killed in a road mishap on VIP Road at Udharbond in Cachar district on Saturday night.
The deceased Manash Mukherjee was a resident of Dudhpatil.
According to sources, the accident took place around 11 pm on Saturday night near Khadi Office on VIP Road at Udharbond, around 20km from Silchar. Manash, who was on his way to Dudhpatil, rammed into an electric pole placed almost on the road. As a result, he fell on the road and suffered critical injuries, sources said.
Onlookers, who witnessed the mishap, rushed Manash to a hospital at Udharbond, but considering his condition, he was recommended to be taken to Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH). When he was taken to the hospital, he was declared brought dead. The body was handed over to his family after post-mortem.
A team of officials from Udharbond police station, after receiving the news, reached the mishap site following which the bike was brought to the police station.
Local residents blamed the electricity department for the mishap. They said the accident happened because of the risky positioning of the electric pole. A number of accidents have taken place in the past because of the pole and though the matter was brought to the notice of the authorities, no step was taken to remove the pole from the road, they said.
The agitated residents strongly demanded that the electric pole be removed from the road and threatened to stage large-scale protests if their demand was not fulfilled.
