SMB employee Habi Das slips into overflowing River Barak, search operation on
In a sad turn of affairs, a Silchar Municipality Board nightwatchman, earlier today, slipped into the overflowing Barak river and has been since missing. Silchar resident Habi Das, after finishing his duty hours went to Bisharjan Ghat in Sadarghat to wash his face with river water.
Barak river is already flowing over danger level and therefore there is a strong current in the flow of water. While freshening up in river water is a daily activity for Habi Das, today morning the wave got better of him and he slipped in.
The incident took place at around 7:00 AM today morning. As per available information, Habi Das is a specially-abled individual and hence had his own limitations. The incident shocked Das’ family and colleagues. SMB chairman, Niharendra Narayan Thakur, vice-chairman, member Rajesh Kumar Das, Amrit Mandal, social worker Basudev Verma, Shyamal Deb and many others gathered in Bisharjan Ghat.
State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) was immediately informed about the incident and the SDRF personnel started a search operation. Till filing this report, Habi Das was yet to be found.
