Barak Valley boy selected for National Youth Award

A youth of Barak Valley has been selected by the Ministry of Youth Welfare and Sports for National Youth Award, 2016-17.

The youth Kh. Krishna Mohan Singha, former general secretary of the All Assam Manipuri Students’ Union (AAMSU), is a resident of Kachudaram under Sonai constituency in Cachar district.

The award presentation ceremony will be held in New Delhi on August 12.

Sharing his reaction, Singha said on Tuesday that he was delighted and honoured to be selected for the award and that the achievement would push him further to do better and better for the society in the days ahead.

Speaking about his village, Singha said Kachudaram has been engulfed with a plethora of problems for years. “Illiteracy has been one of the major problems in the village, particularly among the tea tribe people. With the help of different organisations, I arrange books, copies and pencils for children from time to time,” Singha said.

Besides, emergence of illegal liquor counters and the menace of drugs had been adversely affecting the village’s atmosphere. With the help of some women organisations, he has managed to prevent the activities to a substantial extent, he said.

Singha, who was conferred the Yuva Puraskar award by Sahitya Akademi in 2017, said he involved with various non-profit organisations since 2012-13 and took up a mission to do something for the welfare and development of his village and his community.

Singha completed his schooling from R.D. Roy Higher Secondary School, Kachudaram and graduation from Gurucharan College, Silchar.
