Government of India sanctions 25 electric buses for Silchar, 100 for Assam

After air, now road communication of Barak Valley also to get a major boost as Government of India under its FAME India Scheme- Phase 2, has approved 25 numbers of electric busses for Silchar city.

The department of Heavy Industries & Public Enterprise under Government of India, has sanctioned 5595 electric buses to 64 cities for intra city and intercity operations in order to push for clean mobility in public transportation. Out of this 5595, Assam to get 100 busses which will be distributed between Guwahati, Jorhat & Silchar as 50, 25 & 25 respectively. Guwahati will be getting it under Smart city project whereas Silchar and Jorhat will get under ‘special category-state’.

“86 proposals from 26 States/UTs for the deployment of 14988 e-Buses were received. After evaluation of these proposals as per EoI, on the advice of Project Implementation and sanctioning Committee (PISC) the Government sanctioned 5095 electric buses to 64 Cities /State Transport Corporations for intra-city operation, 400 electric buses for intercity operation and 100 electric buses for last mile connectivity to Delhi Metro Rail Corporation” said a release from Department of Heavy Industry on Thursday.

Each selected city is now required to initiate the procurement process in a time-bound manner for the deployment of sanctioned electric buses on an operational cost basis, the release added.

Better road communications, air connectivity and low cost flights to Barak Valley, was always the dream of people at here and now slowly it appears to be turning to reality. It is good that government has taken the initiative to provide new generation busses for this region but at the same time proper roads are also required for its operation.
