Cachar Police detained 28 for black-flag protest against Pijush Hazarika

Urban Development Minister, Government of Assam laid the foundation stone of Amusement park to be built at Gandhi Bag Silchar. Brain-child of Silchar Municipality Board Chairman, Niharendra Narayan Thakur, the amusement park has already drawn a lot of controversies.

Today, many cultural and political organisations protested on the roads to oppose construction of the amusement park at Gandhi Bag. Along with the park the project includes a hotel, multistorey parking building, banquet and community hall among many others. The protesters are of the opinion that this project will destroy the greenery and the park’s scenic beauty.

When the minister’s convoy crossed Devdoot and was heading towards Gandhi Bag, near Bramhan Barriar, few protesters started waving black-flag. Few moments after the convoy passed the location, security officials arrested 28 protesters and escorted them to a school in Shillongpatty, Silchar.

They were kept hostage there for a few hours and that irked the protesting associations. One of the spokesperson of an association said that she was appaled to learn that the administration arrested the protesters, “Human-chain, black-badge and all are traditional mode of protests and has been there for generations. Why is the government so protest-phobic India is a democratic country and the government must not forget that,” she added.

As per the latest available information, all the detainees have been released.
