Barak Valley Engineering College students protest against poor “basic amenities” in the institute
Students of Barak Valley Engineering College today held a protest outside the Karimganj DC office, protesting against the poor “basic amenities” inside the college, including lack of proper usable water.
Around 150 students, held placards in their hands and raised slogan against the government and Assam technical education department, held the protest demonstration who later also submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner listing their all sufferings.
According to the students, the condition of drinking water inside the campus is such that the consumption of which is causing serious health problems among the students. “Water contains high amount of iron making it unfit for use. Even the water filters are also getting clogged. We came to know that the required boring which was supposed to be done has not been achieved” said a BTech 2nd year student while speaking to Barak Bulletin.
Speaking about the poor power supply, students alleged that sometimes current goes off for consecutive 3-4 days which seriously affects their exam preparations. “Being an engineering college, the uninterrupted power supply is a must for the practicals and labs to run smoothly. But due to frequent power cuts, we can’t do the practical classes. We are also made to suffer a lot during exams” said another protesting student.
Other problems that are faced by the students and were mentioned in the memorandum include lack of adequate books in the institute library compelling the students to buy the books at higher prices from shops, lack of adequate institute funds resulting in non-replacement of faulty lab equipment, etc.
The District commissioner Anbamuthan MP held a discussion with the students and assured that their demands will be looked into, following which the protest was withdrawn.
