Hitesh Dev Sarma returns to replace Prateek Hajela as NRC's Assam Coordinator
At a crucial juncture where letters are to be sent to all the National Registrar of Citizens (NRC) rejects and their fate to be decided, the government of Assam has decided to hand over the NRC responsibility to Hitesh Dev Sarma. He is expected to assume the office of state’s coordinator on Monday as Prateek Hajela shifts to Madhya Pradesh.
The Supreme Court of India had ordered the transfer of Hajela following which the Sarbananda Sonowal government began its search. As it turns out, it decided to bestow its trust in Hitesh Dev Sarma. He is an ACS (Assam Civil Service) officer from the 1986 batch and was appointed as a secretary in the Finance and Urban Development, Government of Assam.
It is believed that Sarma was highly involved in the initial days of NRC in Assam way back in 2013. He has worked at the NRC Directorate till 2016.
