Congress demonstrates at Silchar ; demands Rs 15 lakh compensation for Ranjanpada Deb’s death

A couple of days back, Barak Bulletin shared the story of how Silchar Municipal Board Mechanical Inspector Ranjanpada Deb had committed suicide after facing severe financial crunch due to non-payment of salary.
Today, the District Congress Committee demonstrated a protest and submitted a memorandum to Silchar Municipal Board (SMB) chairman. A copy of the memorandum was also submitted to the chief minister through deputy commissioner of Cachar.
As per exclusive information, Congress has asked for Rs 15 lakh compensation for the death. Their other demands include immediate clearance of pending salaries, garbage clearance etc. They have also demanded that a family member of Deb should be employed in SMB.
From the time, Ranjanpada’s dead body was recovered, there has been a protest against Chairman, SMB, Niharendra Narayan Thakur, and now Congress has also put a demand that he should resign on moral grounds. Pradip Kumar Dey, President Cachar Congress was present at the protest along with former minister Ajit Singh and other Congress leaders.
As readers would remember Deb had called his son Ratnadeep on Friday to let him know that he is jumping in Barak River in order to kill himself. A day later his body was recovered from ‘Bishorjon ghat’ in ‘Sadarghat’ Silchar.
Deb, a leader of the Municipality Union has been demonstrating since a long time in demand of clearance of their wages. The Silchar Municipality Board employees have not been getting their salaries since last six months.
Ranjanpada Deb, was 55years-old, and lived with his wife Moni Deb and son Ratnadeep. His last words to his son over phone was, “Ami aar baari phirbo naa, Maa ke dekhe rakhish,” (I won’t return home ever again, take care of your mother.)”
