"Will sleep in front of AUS Gate" Aritra Babai Dhar; SP Cachar says, "Investigation is on, traffic Police suspended"
The Assam University Students are clear – they want immediate action or else they will continue with their agitation. Since today morning, the students have been protesting in front of the main gate of the Assam University Silchar against the alleged assault on two students of the institution.
Yesterday evening, the students of the varsity alleged that three individuals under the influence of alcohol assaulted two students near Silchar Medical College. They students then blocked the road which was withdrawn after OC, Silchar Sadar Police Station, Ditumani Goswami went and spoke with agitated students. General Secretary of the Students Union Aritra Babai Dhar after speaking with the OC said they are withdrawing the blockade on condition that all three miscreants will be apprehended within the next few hours.
The students also demanded suspension of the traffic Police constable who allegedly refused to help them. “When they were assaulting and abusing, the girl went running to the traffic police but he refused to help. Instead, the constable said, you all settle it among yourselves,” informed Dhar.
SP Cachar, Mugdhajyoti Dev Mahanta confirmed that the traffic police constable who was deputed in Gunghoor Police station has been suspended. “An enquiry committee will look into the matter and till the report is furnished the traffic police constable remains suspended.”
Mahanta also mentioned that the investigation is on. “In the FIR, the students did not mention any name or details of the alleged miscreants. Police is investigating the matter from scratch. This needs time, they want me to give them a timeframe well, at this stage, I can say that the investigation is on and it won’t be possible for me to provide a timeframe at this stage.”
Today morning Police apprehended Zeaur Rahman Laskar, son of Mohimuddin Laskar from Atalbosti Mautpara in Ghungoor area. “That is not enough,” says Dhar. “We want all three behind bars, it will send a strong message to those who think they can assault anyone anywhere,” he concludes.
