Assam University's convocation postponed due to the ongoing strike, confirms vice-chancellor
The ongoing student-agitation in Assam University Silchar has brought the institution to a standstill. Many key offices have remained shut for more than a week due to which the administration has decided to postpone the convocation.
Confirming the development, vice-chancellor, DC Nath told Barakbulletin, “There is a lot of work that needs to be done to conduct a convocation and since the offices are not functional we are unable to do the work and therefore we have decided to postpone the convocation.”
He added that the authority is yet to finalise on a revised date, “We need to discuss among ourselves and only then we will be able to finalise on a revised date. We will be able to announce the same after the offices are functional again,” added the vice-chancellor.
It is worth mentioning here that a section of students of Assam University Silchar are protesting since February 10 against authority’s decision to rusticate research scholar, Milon Das for a period of two years. Assam University Students’ Union and Research Scholar Forum members are leading the agitation and their demands are: 1) The authority must revoke the rustication. 2) The authority must withdraw the FIR. 3) The authority must not take any action against the agitating students. The third demand, however, has changed. Earlier the students demanded that the VC must resign.
The authority met the students yesterday at Cachar College in Silchar, however, that did not bring in a solution and the strike continued.
