After Assam and Manipur the saffron cyclone has decimated Tripura and penetrated deep in Nagaland and Meghalaya. The results of Assembly election in three North Eastern States Meghalaya, Nagaland and Tripura has shocked many. The bye-elections results in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh went against the Modi-Shah and co. and the common belief was Bharatiya Janata Party’s time as undisputed is coming to an end. Well, the North East has decimated any such speculations with the mandate they handed over to BJP and its allies.
Among the three states, for people of Barak Valley, Tripura was in the center of attraction. Known as Devi Tripureshwari’s land Tripura had a left government ruling at a stretch since 1993 and Manik Sarkar incumbent chief minister was eyeing his fourth straight tenure. But, to create history, the people of Tripura have made a tectonic shift from left to right with their polling. The results came in as a major delight for BJP and Prime Minister flew to Agartala address party cadres.
Well Amit Shah, Ram Madhav, Prime Minister Modi, Himanta Biswa Sharma and other political leaders came out and expressed their views and we are sure that you have already taken of note of they had to say, we decided to know what political fraternity of Barak Valley has to say about the Tripura election, will it do any good to Barak Valley, will the Bengali population of the two states unite and emerge as a formidable force against external infiltrations and internal negligence, will the Tripura addition in BJP’s North East portfolio force them to pay more attention towards the region… we asked all this question to political leaders of Barak Valley, while some answered some preferred to dodge and some just ignored us.
Here is what the leaders had to say: (Edited Excerpts)
Dulal Mitra, CPIM Cachar committee secretary: We were certain that we are going to win the election in Tripura, why the result went against us, it’s very difficult to answer that sitting here in Barak Valley. We have to understand one thing that BJP had spent a lot of money to advertise and campaign untrue logics, many leaders from Assam also travelled there to communicate lies to all the citizen and that is how they won the elections. Two days back leaders who were marching and campaigning for Congress and today in BJP… We now need to lift ourselves, our cadres and menawhile people of Tripura will realise how CPIM government has always worked for the benefit common people. I don’t see this Tripura election doing any help to Barak Valley.
Parimal Shuklabaidya, PWD Minister, Assam Government: Tripura result is a response of BJP’s good governance in Assam and the entire country, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership we did not leave any stone unturned when it comes to campaigning. The party workers worked day and night to reach out to the common people and communicate our manifesto, big credit to all the party workers, they played a vital role in picking us from zero to where we are. This result will have its positive impact on Assam, Barak Valley and other North Eastern states. This mandate will benefit Barak Valley from commerce and cultural point of view.
Ajit Singh, former Minister, Indian National Congress: (He was not very keen to speak) Under what circumstances such a shift happened in Tripura is something I cannot comment on sitting here in Barak Valley, this is Tripura’s internal matter.
Well, not only Ajit Singh, the entire congress was apprehensive to comment after the result. Our correspondent spoke to Member of Parliament, Sushmita Dev in the morning and she said to call her back after the result was out. Our efforts to reach her were all in vein; she did not receive our calls.
Kabindra Purkayastha, veteran BJP leader and former Cabinet Minister: Communists have been ruling Tripura since last 25 years and they often say that once communists establish themselves then it is quite impossible to uproot them. Well this result proves that such analogy has no place in Indian democracy. This result is a defeat of communism in India. The credit of this victory goes to the party workers. This result will have its positive impact on Barak Valley and the BJP as whole.
Kaushik Rai, BJP: This is a historical victory especially because it is against a well organised party like CPIM. I think India has never witnessed such a left to right swing ever. In last 25 years Tripura was denied any development, I was in charge of Dholai distric and it’s good to see that BJP has won all six seats in Dholai.
Well overall what we are hearing is Holi was more celebrated yesterday than day before and Saffron was the colour of the day.
