More arrests in Silchar for objectionable social media posts against Hindu Gods, religion

A new trend has emerged in Barak Valley where social media profiles are spotted posting objectionable, derogatory, and provocative comments against Hindu gods, religion, and the people following it. In the past seven days, as many as four such cases have been brought in the attention of Assam Police who immediately nabbed the culprits.

Yesterday, Hindu Samhati cadre Satyabrata Deb lodged a complaint at Borkhola Police Station against a profile in the name of Shaharul Khan who posted an objectionable post on Social Media. The post was against Hindu beliefs and had threatened the people who follow the religion. It also had threats against women in Hindu families.

As per available information, taking cognizance of the complaint, officials from the Silchar Sadar Police Station managed to arrest the culprit late last night.

Subhasish Choudhury, a member of the Hindu Samhati spotted the post and tagged Assam Police on social media platforms urging them to take immediate action. “We have been reporting every case to the Assam Police through twitter, Online FIR’s and also by registering written complaints from various organisations to fight against such hate-speeches. The one posted by Saharul today also highlights the threat of tactful conversion of Hindu girls through marriage and is very sensitive. The things which were claimed as conspiracy to lure and convert the Hindu girls for a long time and the concept of Jihad stands exposed and proved by their recent posts now. The thought process is dangerous,” said Choudhury.

The Assam Police has taken strict actions each time a derogatory post surfaced on social media, yet there is no fear. Choudhury feels the people posting such comments are actually speaking out their hearts. “Maybe out of anger or just losing control over their mind and speaking out their heart. Or maybe they don’t really fear standing behind the bars but want to disturb the peace of the region desperately,” he concludes.
