Assam Government announces 100% free admission to colleges; "Decision taken with COVID in mind"

“Each and every student is eligible for free admission to colleges,” education minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma made this announcement earlier today. He said the decision has been taken by the State Government considering the current COVID19 scenario.

“A lot of the parents have lost their money due to the ongoing pandemic and that is why we have decided to make admission 100% free for each and every student,” said Sarma.

The minister reiterated that when he means free it is 100% free he means no money charged at all. “No colleges are allowed to charge any student for anything. No Saraswati Puja charges, no excursion fees, no prospectus fees. If any colleges are found charging students for anything during the admission, strict actions against will be taken against them,” informed Sarma.

He added that it often happens the college Principals initially charge students saying they will return the money once they get it reimbursed by the government. “If they do such activities this time, it will come under the gambit of corruption and strict actions will be taken against them,” added Sarma.

This will be applicable for students seeking admission in Higher Secondary level up to the postgraduate courses in government institutions across all streams.
