13 monkeys found dead in a tank in Cachar district; officers investigating the matter

In a shocking turn of affairs, as many as 13 monkeys’ corpses were found floating in Kalain. Today evening, locals in the area spotted these dead bodies inside a deep-tank.

DFO Karimganj, Jalnur Ali, informed that these are local monkeys. “We have got to know about the incident. All the bodies have been recovered and sent for post mortem,” informed the DFO

He added that the forest department is still investigating the matter. “It is not clear if the monkeys dived themselves to drink water or if they were poisoned by local residents. It is too early to comment on the cause of death,” asserted the DFO

AFS Pinku Singh, Karimganj forest range said that he got a call from a local journalist at around 5:30 PM and then rushed to the spot. Currently, at the veterinary hospital investigating the case, he added, “We will need time till tomorrow morning to confirm if there is any sort of poisoning.”

It is the monsoon time and there is water available everywhere. Why would the monkeys deep dive into a tank to drink water? “It is too early to comment or share any suspicion,” answered Singh. Adding, “In the past also we have seen one or two dead bodies of monkeys floating in the tank. However, never in such a large number.”

Singh and his team of forest officials recovered these dead bodies from a Water Tank of Bhola Gauri Water Project located in Karirail, Kalain. Though the area comes under Cachar district, the wild life is under the jurisdiction of Karimganj forest range
