161 positive for COVID 19 in Cachar today; 4 died in SMCH

161 tested positive so far in Cachar district on Sunday. Due to the lockdown in Municipality areas, the movement of traffic was less today in the district resulting in fewer tests.

Dr. Bhaskar Gupta, vice-principal of Silchar Medical College and Hospital informed that in the last 24 hours as many as 23 patients have taken admission while 22 were discharged from the hospital.

He added that currently there are 16 patients in the ICU whereas 10 are in critical condition. The SMCH has performed 73,156 tests so far. 156 patients are admitted to the COVID ward in SMCH. It is worth mentioning here that SMCH treats only symptomatic and VIP patients.

“In the last 24 hours, four patients admitted in the COVID block succumbed. All of them were male,” informed Gupta. The reports of the deceased will be sent to the Death Audit Board which will then certify if these are COVID death or not.

Media Expert, District Health Department, Suman Choudhury said that the administration has observed, there are several patients who initially say they do not have any comorbidity and opt for home treatment. But later they develop symptoms and make panic calls for an ambulance.

“In the undertaking that is signed by the patients, it is mentioned that the transfer in case of emergency is the responsibility of the patient and the caregiver. Panic calls for ambulance put the administration in a problem. It is for the benefit of the patients, they must not conceal such crucial information as that might put their life at risk,” said Choudhury.
