92 doctors who tested positive so far in Cachar- not just names on a list, they are saviours

Since the outbreak of the coronavirus, the doctors in Silchar have been under immense criticism. While most of it was targeted to the inadequate healthcare infrastructure, deaths without treatment and delay in tests, the treating doctors were also at the receiving hands.

However, so far, 92 doctors in Cachar have tested positive while treating patients. Many of them have returned to duty after recovery while some are still recovering. Many of them are junior doctors while some are specialists and in the vulnerable age group.

“We take the criticism in our stride. We deal with high emotions. Someone who lost his father will definitely have an outburst and we are used to it,” said a senior doctor who wished not to be named.

She added, “However, the outburst is now on Facebook and the way society reacts to it is worrisome. Without any cross-questioning or verification, the newspapers publish the one-sided emotional expression as a piece of sensationalized-front-page news with bold and red headlines. Now that is shaping public opinion. Then there are portals putting up the videos and photos. By doing so we are all painting a bleak picture of Silchar Medical College and Hospital which is not entirely true.”

Another doctor said that one criticism got magnified and a thousand efforts were left unnoticed. A professor of Silchar Medical College and Hospital said the way patients and attendants treat junior doctors is unfair. “They are all doctors, so the accusation that doctors are not treating but students are is not correct. They deserve respect and they deserve to be encouraged and motivated. We must remember, we are in a long war and the army of junior doctors is saving us from death. The winter could be scary, so we must back them,” said the professor.

He did not shy away from accepting that the facility at SMCH is not upgraded like GMCH or other well-equipped hospitals. “Which makes the job of doctors even more challenging.”
