Massive number of prisoners testing positive in Silchar Jail

The infection has spread inside Silchar jail. In the last 48 hours, 75 inmates and two staff have tested positive for COVID19 inside the Silchar Central Jail located in Jail Road.

The jail authority has informed that all of them are male and most of them have symptoms.

More than 450 inmates are there inside the jail at this stage and all of them will be tested said a senior official in Silchar Jail. He added yesterday, 32 inmates and one staff and today 43 inmates and one staff have been detected with the infection.

In case someone is serious, the administration is taking them outside for better healthcare, “Once they are out of the jail, we don’t know where they go and what is done with them,” said the Central Jail official.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Cachar, Sumit Sattavan said that there is a 45-bed COVID Care Centre inside the jail and if needed the number capacity will be increased. There are few patients who are being treated outside too.

“It is a sensitive matter and we are discretely transferring them to hospitals for better treatment,” said Sattavan. The administration did not reveal if they are taken to any particular facility as that might cause a breach of security.

The testing process will continue inside the jail and depending on what the final number is, the administration will decide the future course of action.
