Assam University Students' Union demands 60% reservation, waiver of admission fees
The Assam University Students’ Union has submitted a memorandum to the vice-chancellor of Assam University. The President of the Union, vice-president, general secretary and assistant general secretary went together to submit the memorandum.
The Union’s first demand is to assure seats for the students who qualify from the affiliate colleges. “After completion of the final year examination, the students of affiliated colleges under Assam University fail to get admission to other universities because of the late result and marking pattern of Assam University. Apart from this, due to the COVID pandemic, students are afraid of going out of the local area and to take admission into the Universities outside Assam,” shared the Union in its memorandum.
“We, thus on behalf of AUSU demanding for 60% reservation for the students of the Affiliated Colleges under Assam University into PG Courses of Assam University Campus,” shared the Union in its letter to the vice-chancellor.
The second demand is to assure financial assistance. “Keeping in mind the present financial conditions of the people due to the economic crisis arose by the COVID-19 pandemic we demanding a complete admission fee waiver by the Assam University Authority for the upcoming session,” stated the memorandum.
Explaining the rationale, president of the union Biswarup Bhattacharjee says, “Many of the students will face problems due to the present situation. Our helping hands towards the Affiliated Colleges are 100%. We also want to stand by the economically weaker section. Thus we demanded 60% weightage for the Students of Affiliated colleges under Assam University.”
Vice-president Joydeep Nandi adds, “In respect to other universities our University follows a bad marking pattern due to which our students suffer a lot.”
General Secretary Aritra Dhar explains, “60% weightage we demanded with an aim to support our 100% cooperation towards our valley students. Most of the students are not getting a chance to go outside. Apart from that they also faced problems due to corona which makes it compulsory for the students to stay in their respective native places and apply here in the University. Thus Barak valley students must need to be given preference.”
Suman Das concludes, “Due to COVID pandemic many of the family members of the students are facing monetary problems. Those who belong to the family of daily wage workers, as well as small businessmen like roadside shop, PG/Hostel owners, will face problems. To help them we have submitted the memorandum.”
