Civil Hospital turns 100 today; "Construction of 300-bedded hospital is the best celebration," Keerthi Jalli
Former Viceroy and Governor-General of India Frederic John Napier Thesiger, 1st Viscount Chelmsford had laid the foundation stone of what we now know as SM Dev Civil Hospital, on November 2, 1920. The district hospital turns 100 today.
On September 26, 2020, when Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited Cachar to inaugurate the 40-bedded ICU at Silchar Medical College and Hospital, deputy commissioner Keerthi Jalli had shared the information about this milestone with the minister. During his speech, the Health Minister said the state will build a 300-bed hospital to mark the occasion – 100th anniversary.
Starting today, the district hospital will conduct several events. “We are planning for a month-long activity ending with a celebration with the entire team- present and past on 30.11.20,” informed deputy commissioner Keerthi Jalli.
She added, “However, since the war against COVID is still on, we have kept the celebrations following all SOP and protocols. Since it is a functional hospital, we have only planned activities that don’t hamper the running of District Civil Hospital. We have planned for a pillar of 100 years of service. The foundation stone will be laid today.”
Amidst all the events, the one that stands out. “The best festivity is still the construction of 300 bedded hospital as announced by Hon’ble Health Minister. The paper-work for the same is underway as we speak,” adds Jalli.
