The real COVID statistics sourced from administrations; Active Cases in Barak Valley- 128 not 2000+

COVID is a crisis that has disrupted most of the world. From The New York Times to the Times of India and from Financial Express to the Wall Street Journal, COVID still makes headlines, almost every day. Life and wealth, people are losing both.

Amidst such a devastating situation, misinformation spread in the form of social media posts or news reports can cause havoc. Recognising it, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India had issued an order in March urging state governments to facilitate the proper functioning of the media network. When the country was under blanket lockdown, the Ministry had given the status of essential service to media outlets. “False and fake news need to be avoided and good practices need to be promoted and these networks play a pivotal role in ensuring the same,” the Ministry had said in its directive.

The Government had also rolled out several initiatives, but the spreading of misinformation continues. Knowingly or unknowingly, public representatives through their “daily COVID updates” spread fake and distorted information. One such information is the number of active cases in Barak Valley. 2250, 1150… all sorts of numbers are peddled in social media and they float into people’s minds like a nightmare.

As of November 22, 2020, the number of active COVID positive cases in Cachar is 112. The number of active COVID positive cases in Hailakandi is four and in Karimganj it is 12. These are the numbers officially sourced from the respective district administrations. So, the total number of active cases in Barak Valley as of November 22, 2020, is 128.
