Why worship Jesus? Bajrang Dal seeks answer from Hailakandi Ramakrishna Seva Samiti
Ramakrishna Mission has a long tradition of worshipping Jesus Christ on the evening of December 24. According to the belief of the devotees, Sri Ramakrishna had a vision of Jesus Christ and Buddha. So the devotees of Ramakrishna Mission celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ on the evening of 24th December just one day before Christmas. In the same way Lord Buddha’s birthday is celebrated on Buddha Purnima not only in Silchar or Karimganj but also at Belur Math.
However, no organisation had any problem with the program being held at Ramakrishna Mission every year. Recently the Shillong Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Cultural Center was locked down by members of Khasi Students’ Union which met with vehement protests in Barak Valley. The Bajrang Dal made it clear in the first week of December that no Hindu could visit churches on Christmas. However, now moving a step further ahead, the Bajrang Dal protested in Hailakandi Ramakrishna Mission against the Jesus worship held there.
On Friday afternoon, members of the Bajrang Dal arrived at the office of Ramakrishna Seva Samiti in Hailakandi. They wanted to know why Jesus Christ was worshiped in Ramakrishna Mission. They argued that Christians in Meghalaya are constantly torturing innocent Hindus and locked down the Vivekananda Cultural Center of Ramakrishna Mission. Through this, there has been a repeated attempt to convey the same message that in the Christian state of Meghalaya, Hindus will not be able to worship their gods and goddesses freely. If India is a secular country then how can a state continue to persecute people on the basis of religion is their logic.
Vikramjit Bhattacharjee on behalf of Hailakandi branch of Bajrang Dal said, “We opposed Jesus Worship at Hailakandi Ramakrishna Mission because we are protesting against what happened at Shillong. They have listened to us and promised to think about it in the future. We just want to send a strong message that if anyone hurts our religious beliefs then we won’t tolerate it. ”
Premangshu Paul speaking on behalf of Hailakandi Ramakrishna Seva Samiti said that they worship Jesus every year following the rules of Belur Math. When questioned by Bajrang Dal they answered that. They were made aware of Ramakrishna Mission’s long tradition when the Bajrang Dal members asked about it. If it is not wrong to observe Buddha Purnima then worshiping Jesus cannot be wrong as well is what the members of Ramakrishna Seva Samiti believe.
Note that for the first time ever in the city of Silchar, the doors of every church were closed on Christmas Eve. Police and CRPF troops were deployed inside the churches in anticipation of the threats issued by Bajrang Dal.
