After Dr. Babul Bezbaruah's letter SP assures security will be tightened inside campus
Silchar Medical College & Hospital recently witnessed some tensed moments, where some people have repeatedly tried to create unrest around the blood bank. In this regard, SMCH Principal Dr. Babul Bezbarua wrote a letter to Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma seeking protection. He also appealed to improve the security of the area by making Ghungoor outpost a full-fledged thana. Superintendent of Police, Cachar B. L. Meena said that he had already sent a request to convert two more outposts in the district, including Ghungoor, into full-fledged police stations. Silchar Medical College & Hospital falls under essential services, hence its security is of utmost importance.
The Superintendent of Cachar Police shared this with the reporters at his office on Thursday afternoon. Additional Superintendent of Police Jagadish Das was also present there. They said, “Last week, an application was sent to convert the Rangirkhari outpost into a full-fledged thana. Following the recent incidents at Silchar Medical College & Hospital, we want to turn the Ghungoor outpost into a full-fledged thana too. We have enough land here and there, the necessary appointments have already been made, only the declaration as a full-fledged thana is left. Similarly, Tarapur outpost too will get a place on this list.”
Police on Tuesday arrested a man named Kala for threatening doctors at the SMCH premises and aggravating the situation. He was arrested based on a case filed against him last year. “Silchar Medical College & Hospital falls under the category of Emergency Services. Although the statement filed by the hospital does not mention anything specifically stringent, we are taking the matter a little harder keeping in mind the gravity of the situation. In the coming days, security will be tightened at the hospital premises. Besides, it will be investigated who else is involved in this incident” he said.
During the Corona pandemic period, Silchar Medical College & Hospital came up as the most trusted institution in the entire Barak Valley. The state government and the health department have repeatedly thanked everyone, including the Principal, for their dedicated services. However, the doctors working there, including the Principal of the hospital, have been very disappointed regarding some recent incidents. They don’t feel safe inside the medical campus. In this regard, Principal Dr. Babul Bezbarua had sent a letter to Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday.
SMCH Principal Dr. Babul Bezbarua frustratingly said, “We have all worked hard during the Corona situation, even the doctors and health workers have risked their lives in the process. The government has also given us recognition. Our doctors have worked hard to provide adequate services to the hospital by overcoming the obstacles. But since the situation came under control, some vicious groups have been trying to ruin the environment in our hospital. Using various excuses, they enter the campus and spread unrest. If and when the situation gets out of control, we inform the police, but the number of police is inadequate as there is no full-fledged police station here.”
