Assam University: Police confirms FIR against students for allegedly beating non-teaching staff during agitation

The ongoing tussle between TDC students and Assam University Silchar takes a new turn. An FIR has been registered against five students (name not disclosed intentionally) for allegedly beating non-teaching staff of the University.

On February 27, students of affiliated colleges had staged a mass demonstration in front of the main gate of the Assam University Silchar. During the agitation, there was a scuffle between the students and a section of the college authority including the security officials.

According to one of the students present there at the agitation, the protesting students were called “outsiders” and a female student was manhandled, abused and was subject to misbehaviour. The student said, only once the men there at University crossed the line, they retaliated. There is no clarity yet on what happened there at the spot during the agitation.

However, the Police complaint filed by the non-teaching fraternity of the University, the students are lying. According to Deputy Registrar, Debashish Chakraborty, the non-teaching staff were beaten. “In a college campus, if the staff is being beaten by the so-called students, this should not be tolerated under any cost. I don’t know what exactly happened there, but as briefed to me, the staff was beaten and that is why the FIR has been lodged,” said Chakraborty.

OC of Dwarbond Police Outpost, Manoj Rajbongshi confirmed that an FIR has been lodged against five students and students of other colleges. He confirmed that five names were mentioned in the FIR. In the complaint, the OC said, it has been alleged that the students had “framed a controversy” and went on to attack the contractual staff employed in the University.

It is worth mentioning here that the Assam University Silchar has issued a notification declaring the time-table of offline examination. The students are demanding an Online examination considering the number of COVID cases in some parts of the country is rising again. They have also protested the University’s callous attitude as it notified examinations so late. Moreover, the student have not got their result of the previous semester.

The University authority is scheduled to meet today and take a decision. As of now, the CBCS TDC examinations are scheduled to begin from March 10, 2021.
