Brawl in Chencoorie Road; 7 including a Police constable injured, 1 arrested

Last night a brawl broke between locals at Chencoorie road in Silchar. What began with a quarrel at a pan shop took a violent shape. As many as seven individuals including a constable of the Jail Police got injured.

According to available information, at around 9:00 PM a group of young individuals got engaged in a heated argument. They were standing next to a pan shop near the junction between Panchayat Road, College Road, and Chencoorie Road. Among them, one individual physically attacked another individual and a brawl broke.

It continued for more than 30 minutes. Meanwhile, the violent mob started attacking the pedestrians who were passing by the area. While returning home after completing his duty, Jail Police official, Digbijoy Paul Choudhury also got attacked. His brother informed that Digbijoy Paul Choudhury has been admitted to a private nursing home and has suffered an internal hemorrhage.

The locals said that it was one individual identified as Titu Das who was attacking the locals and pedestrians. As per their estimate, around seven individuals have been rushed to Silchar Civil Hospital.

Officer-in-charge of Silchar Police Station, Ditumoni Goswami informed that Titu Das has been detained so far, and the Police is investigating the matter. “What caused the brawl is something we will get to know after the interrogation. As far as the attack on Police official is concerned, he was an official of the Jail Police and off duty. We are investigating the matter to find who attacked him,” added Goswami.
